The finals scores for The Gin Cooperative Awards 2024 have been submitted, calculated and verified revealing The Gin Cooperative Awards 2024 winners. The competition was once again extremely competitive and close, with many of the entries this year scoring very highly. We were proud to see a rich variety of regions and styles well represented again this year. In each award category, with the exception of the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Scottish Gin Award’, there were Gold, Silver and Bronze awards and where applicable a new ‘Highly Commended’ award for entries that showed exceptional qualities and came within a 3% margin of a bronze award. The Gin Cooperative Awards 2024 has issued 62 awards this year, with a number of entries picking up multiple awards across different categories. Some of the scores were extremely close this year which is reflected in the number of ‘Highly Commended’ awards in some of the categories.
The Gin Cooperative Awards scoring criteria critically evaluates a range of elements covering gin neat, gin and tonic along with packaging and design. Every entry had 81 individual scoring elements that were used to calculate the final score.
This year’s judging panel featured 72 judges: 24 industry judges, 24 consumer judges and 24 community judges, divided into 8 judging groups. Each group featured 3 industry judges, 3 consumer judges and 3 community judges, with each group allocated a variety of samples for review. Judges were also provided our in-depth judging guide which spanned 34 pages and covered every aspect of the judging process, scoring, judging best practice and more.

The International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD), Heriot-Watt University
We’re honoured to award the second Outstanding Contribution to Scottish Gin Award to the International Centre for Brewing and Distilling (ICBD) part of the Heriot-Watt University. We’ve lost count of the number of Scottish Gin and spirit distillers, brewers and brand owners who have entered the world of Scottish spirits and drinks having graduated with a qualification from the ICBD.
Along with teaching the distillers and brewers of tomorrow the art and science behind brewing and distilling, the ICBD is also used by academics and industry and has been a vital part of various research projects to further the understanding of nearly every element involved in the creation of alcoholic and distilled liquids; studies of different cereals, yeasts, fermentations, examining the molecular make-up and commercial applications along with studies on sustainability, the flavour compounds of botanicals and more. The research undertaken previously, currently and in the future plays a crucial role in the world of Scottish Gin, and wider global spirits sectors, influencing both the academic sectors and commercial applications.
We visited the ICBD in 2018 when we were working on an editorial feature about the ICBD and Professor Matthew Pauley. Over the years we have got to know Professor Pauley and his enthusiasm and passion for teaching and the work undertaken at the ICBD is also one of the many reasons the Outstanding Contribution to Scottish Gin Award this year goes to the ICBD.
