The Gin Cooperative Awards

Announcing the 2022 Finalists.

Published: 20th August 2022

Launched in May 2022, the inaugural The Gin Cooperative Awards 2022 saw entries from a range of Scotland’s gin brands and producers across an assortment of established and recognised gin styles; London Dry, Distilled, Old Tom, Cask Aged, Flavoured and Navy Strength were all well represented across the Scottish Gins entered, showcasing the diversity of flavours.

With a carefully selected judging panel that comprised of judges from industry, consumer and community, the judging panel was just as diverse and unique as the Scottish Gins entered, a real-world judging panel put together to provide a real reflection of three key areas we see as playing a role in gin’s success and continued growth – industry, community and consumers.

Judging involved each entry being scored on a number of key elements including appearance, nose, palate and finish both neat and served as a gin and tonic, with each entry judged by nine judges – three industry, three consumer and three community. Alongside the contents of the bottles, our judging panel also reviewed and judged the packaging for each entry, another element that has played a role in helping raise the bar for Scottish Gin’s shelf appeal to the consumer.

Every judge was provided a detailed and in-depth judges guide that provided them with advice and tips for judging each element of the entries along with general advice, ensuring each judge was judging the entries based on the same guidance. Judges were provided their samples, Walter Gregor’s Tonic Water and Glencairn tasting glasses to help them with the judging.

We want to give all our judges our heartfelt thanks for their time, commitment and fantastic judging notes, which will be provided to the entrants once the final winners are announced later this month. Judging any spirit has its challenges, regardless of experience or background. It is a genuine challenge knowing that the contents of the glass is someone’s handwork. It is their proverbial baby, so we appreciate the hard work our judges have put in to assessing all the entries this year, thank you.
