The gin itself is described as a classic London Dry style gin, with a traditional juniper backbone, citrus forward flavour profile and lingering pepper spice backdrop. Alongside juniper, a number of traditional gin botanicals have been used including coriander seed, angelica root, orange and cardamom, together with some more unusual and exotic botanicals, most notably kumquat, which the family source from a local family-run grocer.
The juniper and kumquat appear on the nose at first, luring you in with a hint of tangerine before giving way to traces of cinnamon, almond and spicy pink peppercorn
The initial citrus sweetness melts into the piney juniper before the warming flavours of cassia, tonka bean and cardamom level things out a little, in preparation for the more earthy notes of angelica root
A final pepper spice hit from the pink peppercorn lingers on the finish
Based close to Glasgow, in the small village of Stonehouse in South Lanarkshire, Shoogle Spirits is very much a family affair, born out of a shared love for gin, tragically a few family losses and a new perspective on life and work as a result of Covid-19 and Lockdown. Three generations have worked together to perfect their signature Scottish Dry Gin in partnership with Inspirited Distillery, the family’s neighbours and friends in South Lanarkshire.
London Dry Gin
London Dry Gin is both a flavour profile and a production method. London Dry Gins tend to follow the traditional, classic flavour of piney juniper, citrus and spice. Alongside juniper, botanicals in London Dry Gin often include orris root, angelica root, cassia bark, citrus peel and coriander, among the core botanicals. The result is a dry gin that features piney juniper along with bursts of citrus and warming spice and earthy, dry notes from use of botanicals such as cassia bark and coriander. Nothing synthetic can be added like flavourings or colours and nothing can be added post distillation apart from water and a tiny amount of sugar meaning all flavours come from distillation.
Friends and neighbours at Inspirited Distillery worked with the family from conception to production of the final recipe. The bespoke, one-of-a-kind still at Inspirited can produce multiple individual distillates in one run, which means the family had great fun trialling a number of botanicals and distillates before narrowing down their favourite flavours and combinations.
