About
McLean’s Gin started in an inconspicuous tenement flat, in Battlefield in the Southside of Glasgow, known as the “gin cupboard”; possibly one of the smallest gin operations in Europe. Colin McLean and partner Jess developed their passion for gin making after receiving a ‘Make Your Own Gin’ kit one Christmas. The now married Mr & Mrs McLean have since upscaled to their “gin lab” in Strathaven, South Lanarkshire, where they have increased production to over 30l batches, five times their old cupboard capacity.
Flavoured Gin
Flavoured Gins vary in flavour and colour. Often the gin will be infused with a flavour post-distillation through maceration or even the addition and blending of individual distillates or essences. Sometimes the gin will be created in one distillation. These styles of gin often have a key flavour which tends to lead the flavour profile, such as fresh berry fruit, citrus or any number of possible key botanicals and flavours. Although this gin style should still include juniper, it is often not the leading botanical.
Production
Based in South Lanarkshire, the McLean’s ‘Gin Lab’ isn’t technically a distillery, as most of the McLean’s Gin expressions are produced using the cold compound method. However, the Ginnery or ‘Gin Lab’, as it’s affectionately known, provides ample space and opportunity for the team at McLean’s Gin to experiment with new flavours and the development of new products. More recent products, including Something Clear and special edition Strathaven Hedgerow have been distilled by Colin in partnership with other local distilleries.
