A navy strength version of Mackintosh Scottish Gin, Mackintosh Mariner Strength Gin is distilled and bottled at 59% ABV. Distilled using nine botanicals including juniper and classic Mediterranean citrus fruits along with locally foraged elderflower, this navy strength gin can be enjoyed neat over ice. The gin also works well in cocktails, holding its flavours in a classic Negroni or Martini.

Tasting notes

Nose:

Juniper-led with a floral hint from the elderflower and sweet citrusy undertones of orange and lemon

Taste:

Clean heady juniper on the tongue, warm creamy smooth texture with a citrus hit

Finish:

Garnish and tonic opens up the gin to a citrus burst which the grapefruit enhances, floral notes then emerge finishing with a lingering crisp finish. Bold juniper that mellows with tonic leaving a mild peppery spice and fresh aftertaste

About

Mackintosh Gin is a true family brand, consisting of Jim and Deborah Mackintosh and their three daughters. The County of Angus where they're based, has a rich history of Viking invasions, Romans, Picts and Celts. It is an area abundant with ancient standing stones and natural beauty and affectionately known as ‘The birthplace of Scotland’. True to their Angus roots, the inspiration for the branding was taken from ‘Lover’s Knot’, a symbol which is carved into a 9th century Pictish stone in Meigle, not far from the couple’s home. A similar version of the knot can be found on the Droston Pictish Stone in St Vigeans near Arbroath, 2 miles from where Mackintosh Gin is distilled.

Navy Strength Gin

Navy Strength Gin, sometimes called gunpowder or overproof, has to be at least 57% ABV to be classed as a Navy Strength Gin in the UK. It earned the name ‘Navy Strength’ because sailors used to test the ABV of their rationed gin on the ship by mixing it with a small quantity of gunpowder and if the mixture ignited they would know the gin was suitable and had not been watered down. The higher ABV can often amplify the flavours and aromas.

Production

The family-run Mackintosh Gin opted to work with local award-winning distillery, Distillutions, under the watchful eye of their experienced distiller Lewis Scothern in Arbroath, Angus. The Mackintosh Gins use a grain neutral spirit for the base before rectification with a balanced botanical mix in custom 50 litre still.
