About
Taking its name from the rock so closely associated with the North East of Scotland, Granite North Gin is inspired by the rugged peaks and ancient forests of the Scottish Highlands. As a keen hillwalker, founder Sandy Matheson has always been inspired by the dramatic landscape of the Cairngorms and the idea to create his own gin came to him while climbing Braeriach in the heart of the Cairngorms. Qualified as an engineer, and a self-confessed perfectionist, he has combined his love of gin and passion for the outdoors in a bold venture to create a new gin from the North East of Scotland.
London Dry Gin
London Dry Gin is both a flavour profile and a production method. London Dry Gins tend to follow the traditional, classic flavour of piney juniper, citrus and spice. Alongside juniper, botanicals in London Dry Gin often include orris root, angelica root, cassia bark, citrus peel and coriander, among the core botanicals. The result is a dry gin that features piney juniper along with bursts of citrus and warming spice and earthy, dry notes from use of botanicals such as cassia bark and coriander. Nothing synthetic can be added like flavourings or colours and nothing can be added post distillation apart from water and a tiny amount of sugar meaning all flavours come from distillation.
Production
Granite North partnered with the experienced team behind Persie Gin at the Persie Distillery, which is located at Bridge of Cally, officially part of Perth & Kinross but sitting just south of Braemar and on the very edge of the Cairngorms National Park. The distillery features a bespoke 230 litre Muller copper pot still from Germany, which is used to distil Granite North Gin. The duo behind Granite North Gin, Sandy and Kirstie, invested in an Aberdeen based property in 2019, which is where the gin is bottled and despatched from. The long term plan is to renovate this into their own fully operational distillery.
