Mark and Alison wanted the bottle to be beautiful, to reflect the picturesque and natural surroundings on Bardowie Loch. This Navy Strength version of Bardowie Loch Gin includes their signature blend of locally foraged botanicals including blackcurrants, ground elder, the stem of a bulrush and bay. Hints of freshly cut grass amongst the citrusy, nutty and subtly spicy freshness give Bardowie Gin its signature flavour and aroma.

About

Mark and Alison Hazell settled in Scotland nearly 20 years ago after finding their dream house, The Jaw, a 300-year-old miller’s cottage nestling on the shores of Bardowie Loch. They were inspired by a cutting from the Glasgow Herald of 1822, which described the actions of a particularly vigilant Excise Man who apprehended a gang of illegal distillers at the west end of Bardowie Loch.

Navy Strength Gin

Navy Strength Gin, sometimes called gunpowder or overproof, has to be at least 57% ABV to be classed as a Navy Strength Gin in the UK. It earned the name ‘Navy Strength’ because sailors used to test the ABV of their rationed gin on the ship by mixing it with a small quantity of gunpowder and if the mixture ignited they would know the gin was suitable and had not been watered down. The higher ABV can often amplify the flavours and aromas.

Production

The couple behind Bardowie Gin set up a microbrewery in Glasgow in 2014 to supply craft beer to discerning local aficionados, and Jaw Brew was born. The beers were well received, and a strong trade was built up over the next couple of years with Mark and Alison attending various events to showcase Jaw Brew beer and learning a lot about the drinks trade in the process. After developing several recipes, the signature Bardowie Gin was created at their Glasgow Brewery & Distillery in January 2017.
