Inspired by his grandfather John Samuel who was a plater in the famous shipyards on Inverclyde, which in its heyday fabricated around 75% of the world’s ships, Shipyard Gin founder Andy Samuel has close ties to the shipyards and local area. Andy has fond memories of his grandfather John, who spent his spare time making homemade wine using berries he would forage from around the local area.
Andy would spend many Sunday afternoons with his grandfather helping him pick berries and plants including elderflower and gorse flowers. His grandfather would tell him stories of his time in the shipyards as the two foraged for ingredients that would be used in the next batch of homemade wine. Andy launched Shipyard Gin in late 2021 as a tribute to his grandfather, the family’s ties to the area and the proud, long history of shipbuilding associated with Glasgow.
