The Crag & Tail gin brand takes its name from a geological formation formed over millions of years. It’s formed when a glacier meets a particularly resistant rock formation, with the tail forming a long, sloping ramp leading up to the crag. Crag and tails are isolated from other high ground, often standing proud, bold and sheer presence can dominate the landscape. A famous example is the crag that Edinburgh Castle sits on while the Royal Mile slopes off down the length of the tail.
Both hailing from Dundee, the co-founders of the Crag & Tail brand and Huffman’s, a drinks distributor, Ramone Robertson and Gregor Maclean were inspired by Dundee’s Law Hill, which just so happens to be a crag and tail formation. With an idea for the brand that connected it with the land, Gregor and Ramone set out to make a well rounded, versatile flavour profile that would work well as a gin and tonic, in a cocktail or simply neat over ice. Working with award winning distiller Lewis Scothorn at Distillutions, the end result is a Scottish Gin that focuses on classic simplicity with a contemporary twist.
The key botanical of watermelon came to the creators after a hunt for an ingredient that wasn’t too fruity but had the right level of crispness and sweetness that would mix well with any tonic. To taste, well rounded and balanced, with citrus immediately present. The spice builds but doesn’t overpower. To finish, clean and refreshing.
