Awards Round Up 2019

Award winning Scottish Gins in 2019.

Updated: 31st July 2019

2018 was an amazing year for Scottish Gin that saw a wide variety of Scottish Gins picking up awards from a range of gin and spirits industry competitions. We’ll be updating this feature on a regular basis with the latest awards featured first and highlighting the awards won by the gin makers and gin brands who work with The Gin Cooperative.

A big congratulations to all the award-winning Scottish Gins, Scottish Gin makers and businesses who have been internationally recognised as being excellent producers of world class Scottish Gin. It’s testament to the quality of the spirits being produced here in Scotland and the talented people behind the great Scottish Gins. It’s also a reflection of the time, effort, hard work and investment these gin makers have made choosing to make their Scottish Gin here in Scotland.

We also understand that some gin makers don’t enter awards or haven’t entered any this year. With so much fantastic Scottish Gin currently being produced, we see all Scottish Gin makers as equals and peers and we should all be extremely proud of helping raise the profile of Scottish Gin and producing, what we consider to be, the very best gin in the world.

So without further ado…

London Dry

“Absolutely delighted we came home from the World Gin Awards in London weighed down with a GOLD medal! To come runner up in the most hotly contested U.K. London Dry category is one hell of an achievement for us, narrowly pipped to the post by Whitby Gin, well done guys and best of luck against the rest of the world. Here’s to 2019.”

Sandy Morrison, Co-founder & Distiller, King’s Hill Gin

“It’s always nice to win an award, but for us we get a much bigger kick out of seeing and hearing just how much people love our gin and the extra lengths we go to craft something special.”

Graham Taylor, MD, Crafty Distillery

UK Compound

“We are all delighted to have won best UK gin in our category for Johnsmas and to get silver in another for Rhubarb Old Tom. We’re looking forward to the 2nd round in London on the 21st February when all the country winners will contest for World’s best Gin. A huge congratulations to the other Scottish gins who have come away with awards this year.”

Gary Watt, Co-founder, Orkney Gin Company

“It is great for us to receive our first award for GoodWill Gin. We look forward to many more in an extremely competitive marketplace.”

Duncan Tait, Distillery Manager, GlenWyvis Distillery

“Arkh-Angell, our Navy-Strength Gin, has had a wonderful few months; winning the Gin Guide’s best Navy-Strength, silver at the Scottish Gin Awards and now gold at the World Gin Awards. Like all of our gins, Arkh-Angell is inspired by local Orcadian history and this particular bottle has real meaning to us, so we are delighted to have this recognition.”

Louis Wright, Head of Production, Orkney Distilling

“Our Cottage Series is about showcasing botanicals that have a local connection to where we make our spirit. Getting a nod in the form of a Bronze for Very Berry is a real testament to the skill of our Distiller Scott and the incredible ingredients we have on our doorstep here in Fife.”

Emma Hooper, Brand Ambassador, Darnley’s Gin

We’ve given a brief overview of each of the awards organisations to try and provide a little more insight about the organisations. As and when the results from each are announced we will update the article with the very latest results.

The Competition receives entries from nearly 90 countries worldwide. No matter where the entry originates, whether it is youthful or aged, it is judged according to its class and treated with respect and consideration.

The Gin Masters – The Spirits Business

Launched in 2008, The Global Spirits Masters has continued to seek and reward excellence from across the world, encouraging recognition among consumers and trade for quality in spirits.

Judging for The Global Spirits Masters is divided into 18 separate competitions to ensure each spirit category is given the utmost attention by specialised judges. Entry Forms with relevant categories can be found here.

For the past decade, the Masters has sought to retain its individuality as the only blind spirits tasting competition to use carefully selected and completely independent judges, including experienced bartenders, spirits journalists, and spirits educators. Entrants can rest assured that their product has been measured constructively and without bias by our panels of trained professionals.

Great Taste Award

Great Taste, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, is the acknowledged benchmark for fine food and drink. It has been described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’. Quite simply the Great Taste logo is the sign you can trust when buying food and drink in your local, quality retailer.

With over 500 judges, including specially trained food writers inputting judges’ comments, came together at 65 judging days from March through to early July. Judging took place at Guild HQ in Dorset and at our permanent office, event and judging venue close to Borough Market, London. As ever we have judged at specialist test centres for tea, filter coffee and espresso. The judges, from all corners of the food world, blind-taste in teams of 3 or 4 ensuring we get a balance of expertise, age and gender.

The Gin Guide Awards

The Gin Guide launched in 2015 with the aim of impartially helping people to discover new gins and new ways to enjoy gin, supporting the industry, and ultimately helping gin producers to get their gin in more people’s glasses and sell more bottles.

Judging for The Gin Guide Awards is carried out by an expert panel of judges with experience across gin production, marketing, events and mixology, and on-trade and off-trade, to achieve a comprehensive view of each entry. Each gin is scored against The Gin Guide’s own scorecard system, featuring: Appearance, Aroma, Taste, Mouthfeel, Finish, Overall Balance & Appeal.
